In Fredonia, New York in the spring of 1994, a 16-year-old sophomore at Fredonia High School assembled a few close friends and started using tools out of his parents’ garage on Summer Street to do odd jobs around the neighborhood. “I can remember doing some jobs in the area that spring, trimming bushes and pulling weeds. Next thing I remember is having a private phone line installed in my parent’s basement, much to their chagrin,” states Shaun Fadale with a smile on his face. (Established in 1994, S. Fadale Enterprises became a reality of then 16-year-old entrepreneur Shaun V. Fadale of Fredonia, New York. Shaun captured the idea of hard work, good ethics, and family values and injected that principle into his business. He learned from his parents and grandparents, all well-liked and hardworking people, that if you incorporate honesty and good practice into your daily life then people will respond the same. This was the corner stone of S. Fadale Enterprises as it still applies today.)
This process of meeting with neighborhood and local people to book jobs and small projects continued throughout the summer and next few summers during Shaun’s high school years. Prior to being 18 years old, he was forced to even have his parents sign a business certificate on his behalf. “It was a different time in our family back then. Risk taking wasn’t on the table, our family worked hard for everything. My father was employed at a local factory and my mother went back to school to become a nurse. They logged some pretty hard hours, so you can see why the business certificate took some convincing.” This was the birth of S. Fadale Enterprises.
As the routine continued, Shaun now was slated to attend SUNY Canton in upstate New York. This would initially pose a problem in continuing the small business he had begun just a few years prior. To combat this problem, his solution was to call forward the local calls to his dorm room. The private telephone line installed in his parent’s basement would then facilitate the continuation of setting up appointments for estimates, and then while visiting home, meeting with the prospective customers to book the projects for the summer months.
After his two years at SUNY Canton, Shaun then transferred to SUNY Fredonia to continue his education in business administration and management and also continue his operations a little closer to home than before. Now back in his home town, Shaun made a point to reach out to local industry with some letters and flyers touting the services he could provide. He caught the attention of a District Manager at National Fuel Gas who opened the door to a bidding process by invite. To his excitement and worry, S. Fadale Enterprises was the successful bidder for three different service centers. Shaun recalls, “We were certainly in over our heads. I had both my brothers helping and anyone else that could pick up a shovel.” After some time, the company and crews acclimated and maintained the contract, winning some intercompany awards for customer service. This would continue for 10 years as S. Fadale’s major account, and along the way picking up similar accounts like the City of Jamestown, and BPU.
From 2008 through 2010 the economic downturn hit everyone pretty hard including Fadale. They did not retain the National Fuel Gas contract and funding for municipalities dried up pretty rapidly. “I honestly didn’t know what to do. We had made a lot of money through NFG and other accounts so I didn’t want to go backwards. I knew I had to go back to basics. I truly went grassroots. I wasn’t a big fan of technology and social media but I embraced it to move forward. My new plan was to marry the two together, book estimates and projects as before but now have an online presence.” After some time, it started to pay off, with S. Fadale keeping their staff busy and servicing the local and regional clientele in all categories of water management (waterproofing, drainage, moisture control, dehumidification, and diversion).
As business continued Shaun knew having two separate locations would be difficult to maintain with his offices in Dunkirk and his shop in Fredonia. He spoke to other business associates and family members about the idea to have one large location as an expansion. This conversation caught the attention of his brother Joshua Fadale. “Josh was looking to make some investment moves of his own in the Florida area. I said to him, why not partner with me here,” Shaun explained. So now the “S” from S. Fadale Enterprises was dropped and the business was incorporated, becoming Fadale Enterprises, Inc. as it stands today.
Over the next several years Shaun and Joshua continued to improve the way business was done. New product lines, new services, and new franchises were all strategies implemented to separate themselves from competitors. They purchased and obtained Avir and Humidex Moisture Control System franchises and became a Gould pump dealer. They also became the number 1 rated company on Home Advisor and Angies List for all of Western New York and Pennsylvania. They currently maintain the highest Better Business Bureau rating of A+. “We love our area, we have such great friends and colleagues, especially locally. Many times, we needed to seek advice from friends who had been in the game a long time. We always appreciate those relationships; they mean so much,” boast the Fadale brothers.
The next strategic move was inevitable. They purchased the former Chrysler Dodge dealership building at 258 West Main Street in Fredonia in 2018. Finally, Fadale Enteprises, Inc. would have a fitting home with lots of space. “We have a beautiful facility now. Offices, conference rooms, shop space, inventory warehouse, a fantastic showroom, and room to grow when we need to expand again. We try to be very professional in our appearance here, most people that drive by can see this,” state the Fadale brothers. One of the interesting factors is their new location stands just 300 feet east from where their grandfather, Anthony Fadale owned Fadale Empire Distributors in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Although the businesses are unrelated in nature, the pride is very apparent. “Once we purchased the building, we knew right away it was special. Our family showed up in numbers to help get things in order. Everything from cleaning a floor to renovations they were in 100 percent. The feeling wasn’t spoken about much but you could tell everyone was thinking about Grandpa Fadale,” explained Shaun, as he continued, “I might get in trouble for saying but I think Aunt Bev even had a rosary lying out front sneaking in a few novenas,” referring to a traditional Italian Catholic prayer.
